How Does an Automatic Transmission Work?

    Last updated 8 months ago

If you ask a mechanic what the most complicated feature of a car or truck is, the most common answer would be the automatic transmission. This complexity is primarily caused by the torque converter, which allows the engine to spin at a different speed than the wheels and transmission when idling. Without such a part, the vehicle would stall every single time you stopped. Talk about frustrating!

This video provides some great insight into what makes a transmission function properly:

Textbook Signs You Need to Overhaul Your Transmission

    Last updated 9 months ago

When a transmission ends up with a serious problem, it will often be in need of a rebuild. Knowing how to recognize transmission problems can help you catch some issues early to avoid needing a rebuild, but recognizing transmission problems can also help you determine when you do need a rebuild. There are a few signs of a bad transmission that may indicate the need to have a rebuilt transmission. Transmission trouble can present itself in many ways, some more serious than others:

Sometimes wear and tear will grind down gears, allowing your car to slip into the wrong gear while driving. This is a sign that your transmission may soon fail completely and will need to be rebuilt.

    Transmission Lag
Transmission lag is when your car does not seem to engage a gear at the right time, instead revving up for a few seconds before catching and jolting the car forward. This is bad for the entire car and should be taken care of right away.

    Loud Noises
A properly functioning transmission should be very quiet. If you hear whining and whirring noises or an unpleasant grinding sound, then your transmission is probably severely damaged and in need of repairs.

    Burnt Fluid
Burnt fluid is a usually precursor for serious problems. If you see that the transmission fluid is dark and smells burnt, then the transmission is probably overheating. If caught early, this can be taken care of without a rebuild.

    Major Leaks
Large pools of red transmission fluid under the transmission will mean that the leak is possibly coming from the transmission itself. This is a sign of very serious damage and will warrant a rebuild or replacement of the transmission.
